Louis J. Butler, aka Louis VI, is a Mixed-race rapper, musician, zoologist, and nature activist blending music and environmental activism. He works to reconnect underserved diaspora communities with nature, aiming to create a new audience of nature lovers, especially from communities with deep historical ties to frontline areas affected by climate change. He delivered a keynote at COP26 on the colonial legacy of climate change and the alienation of people of colour from nature. Louis has contributed significantly to Earth Percent, a charity focused on sustainability within the music industry, and was instrumental in launching NATURE as a musical artist, collaborating with Brian Eno and David Bowie’s estate.
Louis recently became Creator in Residence at the BBC Natural History Unit, where he brings a fresh narrative to nature documentaries. His album EARTHLING combines music and environmental themes, earning critical acclaim for its exploration of climate justice, race, colonialism, and capitalism, all while using music to engage listeners with the climate crisis.
“I think it's important to make young people of colour understand that although you may not see yourself represented - the places that we’re so proud of coming from are actually on the frontline of climate change. Depending on what generation we are, the places where we live and now call home [in the UK] is the place which is disproportionately affecting the places we are all proud of being from.”
