Dr Jaise Kuriakose is a lecturer at the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research at the University of Manchester. His research focuses on developing Net Zero energy systems that are resilient to climate change, by applying a whole systems approach. Dr Kuriakose is known for his work bridging research and practice in energy systems by actively engaging a diverse range of stakeholders across policy, industry and third sector both within the UK and outside. His work on UK local climate change targets and carbon budgets has influenced over 250 local authorities, with five cities formally adopting his proposed targets. He also served as a co-investigator on the DESNEZ-funded Climate Services for Net Zero World (CS-N0W) project, aimed at enhancing scientific understanding of climate risks to the UK’s energy infrastructure and strengthening its resilience. Before his academic career, Dr Kuriakose spent a decade in industry as an engineer, working on diverse projects such as developing a microgrid system that integrates renewable energy generation and battery storage, renewable energy systems, and power distribution systems up to 110 kV.
“Local governments should set evidence based climate targets to take effective action for mitigating climate change. At the same time use of local knowledge from various stakeholders are essential for the delivery of such targets.”
