Areeba studied political science and development in India and worked for the Economic & Political Weekly before starting at Greenpeace India as a campaigner. From 2006-2020 Areeba worked across campaigns and geopolitical contexts, at senior levels in several Greenpeace offices around the world. She campaigned on issues like marine conservation, coal expansion in India, rainforest destruction in Indonesia, and tar sands in Canada and North America. In 2020, Areeba joined The Sunrise Project to lead their Global Finance program aimed at getting big financial institutions to get out of backing fossil fuels.
Greenpeace UK appointed Areeba as their Executive Director, alongside Will McCallum in 2022. Born in India, she will be the first woman and first person of colour to lead Greenpeace in the UK.
