Dr. Amiera Sawas is the Chief Research and Engagement Office at Climate Outreach, which is an organisation that works with people from all walks of life to engage with climate change. They advocate for a social mandate on climate change - where everyone, regardless of their background or identity - feel part of the climate story and feel they have agency to take action and hold decisionmakers to account. Amiera has diverse experience in development, climate and human rights work, in various countries including the UK, Sweden, Pakistan, Jordan and Kenya. As a child of Syrian and Irish parents, also of working class heritage, the histories and impacts of colonialism have been a major theme in her life. Amiera believes passionately in recognising and promoting the voices and leadership of the people facing the most systemic disadvantages - especially black and migrant women. Amiera has a PhD in Human Geography, a Masters in Global Politics and a Bachelors in Psychology.
“International and local climate spaces continue to be highly patriarchal and elite. I regularly experience this intersectional power but just imagine how much more it affects women and girls in the world’s poorest countries who are bearing the brunt of extreme weather. It is so important to consider and consult local women and girls in climate action – and to engage them as leaders - to ensure we protect their hard-won rights and truly reduce the impacts of climate change. When we work together and make sure their voices are heard, we can do so much more to save the planet!”
